Semana Santa - The Holy Week
From April 14 until April 21 2019, Spain is celebrating the Holy Week, which is called Semana Santa in Spanish. This Holy Week starts on Palm Sunday. It is a religious party that is being celebrated in almost all the villages and cities in Spain. From Thursday until Saturday you can enjoy the processions in which thousands of people participate and which wander through the streets of the city center of for instance Orihuela. In these processions there are a lot of different catholic groups who have their own traditional colourful clothing. On their head they carry a high pointed hat that looks a bit like the Ku Klux Clan, but of course this has nothing to do with that. The reason why the ´nararenos´ cover their head is because of the shame what has been done to Jezus and also to guarantee the anonymity of the ´nazarenos´. De pointed hats have different colours, but white, purple and black are the main colours. In the processions there are a lot of constructions/sculptures that are being carried around, called ´Pasos´ in Spanish, which represents several parts of the life of Jezus from his birth until his death. The biggest procession is on Good Friday in which more than 9,000 people particate in Orihuela. The Spaniards highly value Semana Santa and have a lot of respect for it. It is an event to which they are looking forward to already weeks and some months in advance. It is really worthwhile to go and have a look at this spectacle. The children can bring an empty bag with them as a lot of sweets are handed out.
