Where can you try the best Spanish food and drinks?
Anyone going to Spain who wants to taste the delicious typical Spanish meals and tapas can choose between a wide range of bars and restaurants, preferably the not tourist dining places. If you want to taste the typical Spanish kitchen, you better choose a place where Spanish people go as well, so usually a bit land inwards, where there are less tourists. Each province and region has its own culinary specialty. Because Spain is situated in between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, fresh fish "pescado" is quite common on the menu, as well as lobster, squid, gambas and other seafood "mariscos".
When you eat out it is important to know that Spain has another time schedule for eating than other Europeans.
Breakfast "El desayuno"
The average Spaniard starts his day with a coffee and a cookie or magdalena. Later in the day, around 11am, they eat what we could call breakfast, but they call it "El almuerzo", which usually consists of a toasted sliced French bread with olive oil and a topping. Lots of Spaniards love "pan catalan" which is a toasted French bread with olive oil, crushed tomatoes and dried serrano ham "media tostada con tomato y jamón serrano".
Those who have a sweet tooth should try "churros". This a a fried dough, which is served hot with melted chocolate or sugar.
Lunch "La Comida"
This is the most important hot meal of the day. In restaurants and bars can you choose "a la carte" or there is also the possibility to choose between several cheaper menus called "menu del día". These consist of 3 courses with drinks, like a bottle of wine, beer or soft drinks included in the price, ranging from 8 to 15 EUR. Lunch is usually served between 2pm and 3.30 pm. It is common to start with a big salad with tomatoes, bell pepper, olives, capers, tuna, corn, union, etc, which is placed in the center of the table to share.
Can be soup, rice (small paëlla), pasta or a plate with pieces of meat, sausage and cheese, called "entremeses".
The main dish
This is usually grilled meat or fish with potatoes, tortilla or French fries and sometimes a little piece of vegetables as decoration.
Typical deserts are caramelized pudding "flan", yoghurt, fresh fruits and slices of cake with a nice cup of coffee or a "chupito", a short drink which according to the Spaniards is a good digestive.
Afternoon tea "La merienda"
About 6 pm they eat a snack or sandwich in order to bridge the time between lunch and supper.
Supper "La cena"
Spaniards have the habit to go to bed rather late, so they have their last meal between 10 and 11 pm. It is similar to lunch but a smaller and lighter version. Because of the economic crisis during the previous years, most people eat this last meal at home and therefore it is not always served in all bars and restaurants anymore.
Those who like to taste a bit of different dishes can choose several tapas which are being served in the bars and restaurants. After lunch Spanish residents take a break "siesta", they have a rest or a short nap before starting again with the remainder of the day.
Spain is known for its extensive range of wines. Because of the different wine regions, you can find a wide variety, each with its typical flavor and character. You can find cheap, but good wines starting from 2 EUR. Therefore it is quite logical that usually wine is being drunk with their lunch.
