Taxes for non-residents
When you own a property in Spain as a non-resident there are 2 types of taxes you have to pay. In general these costs are low, below you can find more information on the way they are calculated.
Property tax (IBI in Spanish)
This is an annual property tax to be paid to the townhall. Each municipality determines the percentage that is being applied to the cadastral value of the property within the government limits.
Income tax (Renta in Spanish)
Even when you are not living in Spain, you have to file a tax return. As the government of Spain considers your property in Spain as a potential source of income, you need to pay income tax on a theoretical rental income (whether you rent it out or not).
